Revising the AASHTO Guidelines for Design and Construction of GRS Walls
Current national guide of GRS walls treats the reinforcement as “tiebacks” and fails to account for soil-reinforcement interaction. Professor Jonathan Wu's 2001 report, entitled “Revising the AASHTO Guidelines for Design and Construction of GRS Walls,” identified and proposed revisions needed in current guidelines of reinforced soil retaining systems, commonly known as MSE walls. The report is a good reflection of the insights and innovations that Professor Wu had with the wall system. In summer of 2010, the Federal Highway Administration elected to publish an updated report and distribute it to the transportation design professionals in State DOT’s. The updated report is currently in press, and can be obtained through Michael Adams of Federal Highway Administration, or Professor Jonathan Wu.
